The Democratic Socialists of America apparently didn’t get the memo that party discipline is a dying art that requires a deft hand. Just ask the very undisciplined Democratic Party, which has spent the entire month of July embroiled in a public civil war over whether or not President Biden should continue his re-election bid. Meanwhile, the DSA unceremoniously dumped erstwhile poster child Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for the crime of not toeing a maximalist line on Israel and Gaza.
To be fair, the DSA isn’t officially a political party, but an NGO, although you’d be forgiven for thinking otherwise. On Wednesday, the organization’s National Political Committee officially withdrew its conditional endorsement of AOC in a web announcement. This came on the heels of the New York congresswoman’s participation in a panel with leaders from the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, in which she offered milquetoast cautions against anti-Semitism. “This sponsorship is a deep betrayal to all those who’ve risked their welfare to fight Israeli apartheid and genocide through political and direct action in recent months and in decades past,” the DSA said.
